What We Do

To successfully represent Ngāpuhi, the Rūnanga is creating and improving relationships with hapū, community groups, other Iwi, local government, Crown Agencies and the Government.

To best understand what this means, look at the Runanga’s achievements. Politically we have implemented a new constitution that makes the way we operate transparent and accountable. It’s a constitution based on what Ngāpuhi people want to see happen in and for Ngāpuhi. It is also readily available, both on request or online.

The Rūnanga has also been busy encouraging Ngāpuhi people to get involved in their Iwi. Developing the website www.ngapuhi.iwi.nz, Iwi database and research library are integral to the success of this plan.

Since 2001, the Rūnanga has rapidly increased the return of its fishing asset – the Interim Quota, an asset that had under performed for a long time. The revenue generated from this has been channelled into new investments - like the Caltex Service Station in Kaikohe - and hapū and social development in the best interests of the tribe.
