Kaikohe Summer Safari
Be safe, be positive; BE IN THE LOOP
Kaikohe Social Sector Trials: Summer Safari project testing theories on engaging youth throughout summer and back to school on day 1, term 1, 2015.
The Social Sector Trials (SST) are about exploring new approaches to achieving better outcomes for Kaikohe youth, and creating new opportunities for positive engagement and role-modeling. The Summer Safari project aims to maintain consistent positive engagement throughout summer with a program of youth-focused and youth-led activities, events, and mentoring.
Events clustered from November to March will proactively deliver Kaikohe youth into 2015 with a sense of community, fun and positivity.
Kaikohe’s new Youth Coordinator has already proven she is up the challenge of getting our youth involved. Kihi Ririnui will be known to many as ‘Miss Kihi’, and if you know her by that name you’ll know she brings wealth of experience as an entertainer and MC. Less well known is her experience and skill as a mentor and her unique ability to blend the two skill-sets together.
Miss Kihi exemplifies the theory that while you’re entertaining, you can also be learning about what is happening in the lives of young people, and you can also be delivering messages that young people really do take home with them.
Summer Safari milestones and events coming up include running workshops for youth wanting to apply for the Aspirations Fund, Wellbeing Week – December 9 to 12, an attendance-focused roadshow, which has visited 5 local schools and counting, design and photographic competitions, sports days, youth hubs coming up, and of course music and food!
The Aspirations Fund is a fund available for Kaikohe youth who need assistance to achieve their goals. Applications will be considered by a Kaikohe-based panel including youth. Round one closed last week (28 November) and we are looking forward to announcing the successful applicants and projects. Round two is opening on 8 December and closing on January 30. Check out our Facebook page for updates, and for information on the Aspirations Fund ‘IDEA Workshops’ and other Summer Safari activities.
The Summer Safari project will provide a network of events to transition students from 2014 to 2015, and create a broad group of young people who regularly demonstrate positive profiles of youth to the Kaikohe community.
