Overview
Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi O Ngāpuhi (‘the Rūnanga’) introduced and established the Ngāpuhi Education Scholarships in 2003.  The overall aim of the Ngāpuhi Education Scholarships is to assist students registered on the Ngāpuhi Iwi Register to:
•    Fulfil their potential for academic success;
•    Encourage applicants to contribute their knowledge and skills towards the wellbeing and development of Ngāpuhi whānau, hapū and iwi.

The following 2019 Scholarships are now available for approved studies at the following levels:

University Entrance/NCEA Award
15 x $500 Disbursements

Bachelor/Undergraduate Degree
42 x $1,000 Bachelor Degree level disbursements

Graduate and Post-Graduate Scholarships
7 x $1,500 Honours Degree
7 x $1,500 Graduate or Post-Graduate Diploma
5 x $2,000 Masters
4 x $4,000 PhD

Eligibility
To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must:
•    Whakapapa to Ngāpuhi and be fully registered with the Rūnanga
•    Be formally enrolled with a tertiary provider as a full-time Undergraduate or part-time Graduate or Post-Graduate
•    Be studying in New Zealand
•    Complete a 2019 Ngāpuhi Education Scholarship Application Form and provide all information requested by the closing date.  Incomplete application forms will not be accepted and will be returned to the applicant.

•    All sections of the application form must be completed.
•    You are not eligible to apply if you have been the recipient of a scholarship in the previous academic year.

The Sponsorship Fund is a one off application where a group or organisation are participating in or organising a special event. To be eligible for this fund you must fulfil the following:

  1. Apply for funding at least 15 working days BEFORE the event happens.
  2. Members of your group or organisation must be registered with Te Rūnanga-A-Iwi-O-Ngāpuhi.
  3. Provide in writing, a letter and profile outlining your event, include overall costs, and a photograph for the Ngāpuhi website (Ngāpuhi News). This can be as brief or as long as you wish.
  4. Provide a letter of verification from your coach, teacher or organisation on letterhead, confirming your participation in this event
  5. Provide your bank details on a pre-printed bank deposit slip, or a verified printout of your bank account details from your bank. Payment will be made by Direct Credit to your account.
  6. The amount of the grant shall be a contribution towards the cost and not represent the total cost to the group.
  7. At the discretion of the CEO, the grant may be made up of a combination of cash and Ngāpuhi tribal wear.
  8. The MAXIMUM amount in total shall not exceed $1000 per group/team or organisation.
  9. The event must have a major impact or contribution to Ngāpuhi.
  10. A brief report is required once the event is completed. If a report is not submitted, you will not be eligible for the Sponsorship Fund in the future.
  11. The Sponsorship Fund does not cover costs related to education fees, medical bills, housing, debt, business ventures or legal costs.
  12. IMPORTANT: If you are successful in receiving funding, a) you will not be eligible for further funding for 12 months  b) you agree to your profile and event being used as positive publicity for Ngapuhi (you will be notified).

If your group/team or organisation does not attend the event, the funds must be returned to Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi O Ngāpuhi.

The Discretionary Fund is a one off application where a child/adult represents their region in a successful event or participates in a special event. Where there are more than five children/adults from the same team/club applying, they must apply for the Sponsorship Fund as a team/club/group.

To be eligible for this fund you must fulfil the following:

  1. Apply for funding at least fifteen working days BEFORE the event happens.
  2. Register with Te Rūnanga-A-Iwi O Ngāpuhi.
  3. Provide in writing, a letter and profile outlining your event, including your achievements, and a photograph for the Ngāpuhi website (Ngāpuhi News). This can be as brief or as long as you wish.
  4. Provide a letter of verification from your coach, teacher or organisation on letterhead, confirming your participation in this event
  5. Provide your bank details on a pre-printed bank deposit slip, or a verified printout of your bank account details from your bank. Payment will be made by Direct Credit to your account.
  6. The amount of the grant shall be a contribution towards the cost and not represent the total cost to the individual.
  7. At the discretion of the CEO, the grant may be made up of a combination of cash and Ngāpuhi tribal wear.
  8. The MAXIMUM amount in total shall not exceed $200.00 per person.
  9. A brief report is required once the event is completed. If a report is not submitted, you will not be eligible for the discretionary fund in the future.
  10. The Discretionary Fund does not cover costs related to education fees, medical bills, housing, debt, business ventures or legal costs.
  11. IMPORTANT: If you are successful in receiving funding - a) you will not be eligible for further funding until 12 months after the event  b) you agree to your profile and event being used as positive publicity for Ngāpuhi (you will be notified)

If you do not attend your event, the funds must be returned to Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi O Ngāpuhi.

Development Funding Opportunities

Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi O Ngāpuhi provide funding to assist and support Ngāpuhi marae and hapū communities achieve their development goals. 

The fund is delivered across three funding streams: the Hapū Development fund, Minor Capital Works fund and Major Marae Project Assistance fund.
